Spelling at Ashley Down Primary School

In Key Stage 2, we follow the Jason Wade Sounds & Syllables spelling programme to support teaching and learning of spellings (www.jwed.co.uk). The concept of the Sounds & Syllables spelling approach is briefly introduced towards the end of Year 2 to bridge from the Unlocking Letters and Sounds phonics scheme so that the children begin to apply their phonological knowledge and practise using the Sounds & Syllables steps before starting Year 3.  From Years 3-6, children have weekly 'Sounds & Syllables' spelling lessons (which cover the national curriculum and statutory words) and children are encouraged to use the steps across subjects. This is because the aim of the programme is to equip children with a simple but logical way to help them independently spell a word when they need it most - at the point of writing.
