A Guide to Supporting Spellings at Home
The lists below contain the words that your child will be learning to spell throughout the year at Ashley Down Schools. The list is mainly made up of words that children need to spell correctly to become confident and fluent writers. This includes words that children use most often in their writing and words that they often misspell. As well as these, it also includes statutory words from the National Curriculum (these are also listed in your child’s Reading Record from Year 1). The words in this list will be taught alongside other spelling objectives and rules as part of our spelling and English lessons.
We would be grateful if you could support your child at home by discussing the meaning and uses of the words in the list, learning to read them and learning to spell them. As part of their Home Learning (Homework), your child will regularly bring home an activity relating to the spellings that they are focussing on in class. This may be in the form of a list of words to learn or a spelling rule with a task to complete. Children who need extra support with learning spellings may be asked to focus on words from previous year groups. However, it is vital that each child is still exposed to all of the words from their year group list so that they can be included in their vocabulary and writing. In school, the children are expected to use joined handwriting from Year 2, so please encourage them to practice their spellings using joined handwriting. This is especially important if they find spellings particularly challenging because joining will help to familiarise themselves with letter strings and rules in words.
